Working parties at Delitoewa
The working party, dressed in a curious assortment of clothes, is paraded, and conveyed by lorries through Medan to Delitoewa, 17 kilos away. Here is a wide swift, shallow, stream from the bed of which thousands of rounded stones, varying in size from an egg to a laboe, are collected by natives piled in heaps on the dusty bank. 2. Our job is to heave the stones into lorries, five men to each. It is warm work, as the stones reflect the rays of the sun. 3. When the lorries depart with their loads, those left behind amuse themselves with a British/Japanese "Putting the weight" contest. 4. Piled high with stones, the lorries trundle over the dusty dried-up river bed, strewn with boulders and bushes. They raise choking clouds of thick dust as they jolt solidly on flat springs. 5. Arrived at the railway, about 2 kilos away, the lorries are quickly unloaded into railway wagons and then return empty to the river. 6. Lightened of their loads, they buck and bowl over the rocks, producing acute discomfort. Three journeys in the morning and three after lunch complete the days work."
