The day after Amsterdam celebrated the first birthday of the Queen after the liberation, the Liberator Fieldmarshall Montgomery visited Amsterdam. Perhaps nowhere he is received with so much enthusiasm as in this Dutch town that had given more lives to the cause of freedom than any other town in Holland. Monty's trip through Amsterdam was a triumphal march: the streets were decorated; beautiful Persian rugs were hanging from the windows of the old palacse on the canals. Montgomery, who was accompanied by the prime-minister Schermerhorn, not so long ago leader of an underground fighting-squad, was recieved at Amsterdam's border by Burgemeester De Boer. The Fieldmarshall liked it: he was in such hogh spirits that he ate meat at dinner.
